Job Title: Instructor, Math & Science
Reports to: Academic Team Leader
Department / Section: Academic Services Department
Basic Function:
Teaches Math or Science courses to students in the Pre-Core, Core, or Employee programs. Uses a variety of resources in order to develop schemes of work and lesson plans that foster a healthy learning culture in the classroom and generate the most effective interactions with students.
Work Performed:
- Prepares daily lesson plans and delivers lessons to a range of classes. Uses a variety of resources in order to develop schemes of work and lesson plans that foster a healthy learning culture in the classroom and generate the most effective interactions with students.
- Selects and uses effective instructional methods and learning materials.
- Takes part in producing and implementing a variety of tests and assessment tools.
- Marks students’ work, gives appropriate feedback and maintains records of students’ progress and development. Uploads records of students’ grades on LMS (Learning Management System) and keeps backup copies of these grades.
- Establishes and maintains a cooperative relationship with all students, fellow instructors, direct supervisors, and administrative personnel.
- Supports students on an individual basis through academic or personal difficulties. Manages students’ behaviour in the classroom and on ATA premises and applies appropriate and effective measures in cases of misbehaviour.
- Provides a positive environment in which students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process.
- Participates in departmental and academy meetings.
- Conducts regular peer observations and participates in regular in- service training as part of continuing professional development.
- Meets professional obligations through efficient work habits such as meeting deadlines, honouring schedules, and coordinating with other colleagues.
- Reports any problems, challenges, malfunctions or HSE hazards to the Senior Instructor.
- Performs other professional duties as assigned by Senior Instructor as required.
- Performs occasional weekend duties to assist in the administration of tests (e.g. Cambridge Language Tests, Institutional Entry Test, etc.).
- Assists in assessing changing curricular needs and offers plans for improvement.
- Organizes and participates in extracurricular activities, such as ATA sports day/national day celebrations.
- Collaborates with fellow instructors and other stakeholders in order to enhance the learning and teaching environment.
Professional Development:
- Prepares an individual professional development plan in coordination with the concerned Senior Instructor, English Language.
- Participates in professional development programs in ATA and attends local conferences, in coordination with the Senior Instructor.
Work Contacts
- Daily contacts with students.
- Daily contacts with fellow instructors, and Senior Instructor, to exchange ideas relating to good practice and effective teaching.
- Occasional contacts with counselors in respect of students’ behavior, attitude and academic performance.
Independence of Operation:
- Reports to the Team Leader Academic Section, but receives work direction from the concerned Senior Instructor.
- Works according to established policies and professional teaching standards. Completed work is subject to review by the Senior Instructor and the Team Leader.
Supervisory Responsibility
- Supervises students inside and outside classroom environment.
Physical Effort:
- Some physical effort, standing up in class four/five hours per day, handling of Science Lab equipment, chemicals, glass wares and other materials in his area for 40% of the working time.
- Exposed to eye-strain due to computer use, for about 30% of the working time.
Work Environment
- Exposed to Science Lab environment conditions, such as corrosive and flammable substances and heat, noise and grease for about 40% of the working time when conducting Science Lab activities.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Science (Chemistry, Physics) or Mathematics preferably with a teaching certificate/degree.
- Five (5) years of experience in teaching Math/Science with 2 years inside the UAE.
- Computer skills especially using Microsoft Office and familiarity with using Learning Management System (LMS) and Student Information System (SIS).
- Proficiency of the English language.
