JOB PURPOSE:
Ensure smooth running and timely maintenance of all mechanical, electrical and electronic machinery, equipment and installations on the vessel so that she can sail effectively and safely.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Maintenance Engineering
Monitor the engine room closely and operate the machinery and equipment ensuring these are running satisfactorily, identifying causes of any malfunctions and correcting the faults.
Carry out daily/tests as well as the planned periodic inspections or the vessel's machinery, systems and equipment to monitor performance.
Carry out related activities such as marinating the equipment required for pollution control, combating oil spills, etc. during regular operations and bunkering.
Marine Maintenance is managed in line with Company standards
All marine maintenance objectives are accomplished
Dry Docking Requirements
Assess dry-docking requirements for the vessel in conjunction with the Master and provide inputs to Operations Department of the Company to facilitate dry-dock planning.
Monitor dry-docking activities by staying abroad the vessel during dry-docking to ensure all engineering related repairs/maintenance are executed satisfactorily
Dry docking requirements are identified
All Engineering related maintenance is executed by the dry docks to the Company standards
Safety and Pollution Control
Ensure high level of safety, pollution control and international standards compliance in all activities relating to operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment
Compliance to all Safety and Pollution standards followed by the company
Technical Decision Making
Contribute to technical decision-making on major replacements/ repairs by giving inputs to relevant authorities at the Station.
Inputs to technical decision making are accepted
Maintenance Crew Management
Supervise and direct maintenance crew (mechanics) and ensure they observe all safety guidelines in order to accomplish the maintenance objectives in line with Company standards.
All maintenance objectives are met
Maintenance Records
Evaluate records of all maintenance activities and report any non-conformance in line with prescribed procedures. Ensure validity of certificates of all equipment on board.
Maintenance records are updated timely and accurately
JOB CONTEXT:
Scope :
Authority : Works in line with Standard Operating procedures and guide lines. Follows the safety and environmental regulations. Works closely with the Tug Master on day to day aspects but follow the master's decision in case of critical situations or emergencies.
Contextual Factors :
The job is based on board the Company's vessel. In that sense it is a distinct work environment, viz. living and working in a confined space and being exposed to the engine room noise and overall risks associated with the proximity of the tug to tankers that are being loaded with hazardous cargo. Constant alertness and strict compliance with safety regulations and procedures are inherent aspects of the job.
COMMUNICATIONS & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS (ILLUSTRATIVE NOT EXHAUSTIVE):
Internal: Day to day work contacts are with the Master of the vessel and with the engine room crew (mechanics). Has periodic contact with the station personnel on maintenance and spares related issues.
External: Interacts with dry-dock company personnel.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, & SKILLS:
QUALIFICATIONS: Class I (C/E) certificate of competency STCW 95. Relevant courses on safety, fire fighting and related aspects required for validation of certification.
EXPERIENCE: 10 years experience on large vessels, preferably tankers.
SKILLS: Planning, people management and decision-making skills.
